Are the SDGs Enough? Critical Perspectives on Sustainability in Higher Education
With accelerating socio-ecological crises unfolding around us, a sustainable transition is becoming increasingly urgent. However, what knowledge leads to sustainability? How is sustainability imagined at Lund University?
To equip students with knowledge and tools to further a transition to a sustainable society, Lund University has set out to integrate sustainability in all its educational programmes, using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a common frame for sustainability. However, concerns have been raised about the SDGs’ ability to bring about systemic change.
This panel aims to engage with this tension and facilitate a discussion on critical perspectives of sustainability in educational institutions.
Is the university’s conceptualisation of sustainability enough to bring about sustainable change? Should the university do more to enhance sustainability through its education? Join us as these questions, and more, are explored and discussed in a panel debate between key scholars and staff at Lunds University.
The panel will consist of:
- Prof. Emily Boyd, Lund University Centre for Sustainability Science (LUCSUS)
- Dr. Max Åhman, Environmental and Energy Systems Studies
- Prof. Max Koch, School of Social Work
- Dr. Vasna Ramasar, Human Geography
and be moderated by Dr. Magdalena Bexell, Deputy Head of the Department of Political Science.
This event is part of Sustainability Week 2023, an annual event organised in collaboration between Lund University and Lund Municipality. This year, over 60 lectures, guided tours, exhibitions, and more are arranged.
